What is Musculoskeletal- Manipulative Physiotherapy?
A Musculoskeletal-Manipulative (MM) Physiotherapist has a Masters degree in the assessment and treatment of aches and pains. They have spent a year, over and above the average Physiotherapist gaining extra skills in the area of comprehensive assessment of all areas of the body, interpretation of investigations, reviewing and applying evidence based approaches to treatment and refining manipulative skills to all joints of the body.
How does a Musculoskeletal- Manipulative Physiotherapy treat?
Our ‘MM’ Physiotherapist initially addresses symptoms associated with inflammation of an injury, such as pain and swelling. They may use modalities such as ice, acupuncture, ultrasound, soft tissue and compression bandaging to assist in the resolution of this phase of healing.
Our ‘MM’ Physiotherapist is then able to address dysfunction associated with an injury such as stiffness, tightness, weakness and de-conditioning. They will restore optimal movement to an area by mobilising joints, stretching muscles and prescribing exercises. This may involve a local area but is usually in context of function of the whole body.
Finally, once symptoms are alleviated and correct movement restored, our ‘MM’ Physiotherapist is able to advise regarding self management of the condition and how to prevent recurrence.
Emphasis is on evidence based care. Management is proactive including referral to the G.P for further investigation, review and encouragement of self management.
