Real Time Ultrasound
Real Time ultrasound is equipment used by the Physiotherapist to assess contraction of the deep stabilising muscles of the spine (core muscles). It is like the equipment used by Obstetricians to assess the foetus in the womb. Physiotherapists use it to accurately assess the timing and endurance of the deep spinal stabilisers. It enables specificity of muscle retraining and provides visual feedback of the muscle performance which can assist the patient in effectively engaging their core muscles.
There is significant scientific evidence to support the efficacy of core conditioning in improving movement quality. Real time ultrasound has been demonstrated to more effectively facilitate core conditioning.

Clinical Pilates
At Shellharbour Health, we prioritise small group pilates groups so we can personalise each session for a bespoke clinical approach where it is highly specific to the individual.
We identifies the key issue restricting movement and focuses on carefully selected exercises to optimise the individuals’ physical performance. It is suitable for all ages and physical backgrounds. Pilates is considered a holistic approach to optimising the body’s efficiency from the inside out.
Clinical Pilates is a form of physical exercise that focuses on posture, core stability, balance, control, strength, flexibility and breathing. It has been adapted from the traditional form of Pilates established by Joseph Pilates. It is often used in conjunction with Physiotherapy as a means of treating a variety of injuries, particularly neck and back dysfunction. There is an emerging body of scientific evidence supporting the application of Clinical Pilates in restoring optimal movement patterns and managing low back pain. Clinical Pilates focuses on the retraining and recruitment of the stabilizing muscles (core) that support the back and body movement.
Pilates benefits:
- Improves balance and coordination
- Enhances core/trunk stability and strength

- Achieves flexibility and strength without bulk
